We all are familiar with the black screen of death on Windows. However, since Android 2.2, few users have reported to have experienced the black screen on Android as well. In some cases, when you open the screen of your phone or tab, it remains black. The phone ringtone goes off or it starts vibrating but you cannot receive the call, because it displays a black screen.

In other cases, the device reboots, the manufacturer logo appears on the screen and then instead of the homescreen of your device, all you see is black screen. Both scenarios may happen when you have dropped your phone inadvertently or because of some internal system error. Whatever the case might be, it’s a really frustrating situation.

Don’t worry though. We have brought out the solution to how to fix black screen on Android phone for you. Let’s jump right in!

What are the Reasons for Black Screen on Android Phone?

There might be various reasons as to why black screen appears on Android. Below are the most common ones-

  • Installation of bugged, malicious or incompatible apps.
  • Malicious virus attack.
  • Jam-packed cache memory or device storage.
  • Charging the phone with a non-compatible charger.
  • Hardware malfunction or faulty hardware such as an old battery.

How to Fix Black Screen on Android Phone?

The most probable solution to fix black screen is to reboot your phone. Now you might ask “how can I reboot when it is stuck on black screen?” Take a breath. There are a number of ways to restart your Android device when it is stuck at black screen. They are listed below-

1. Reboot through Power Cycle:

This method works only on phones that have removable battery.

  • First, press and hold the power button of your device for about 10 seconds until it completely shuts down.
  • Now remove the battery from the phone.
  • As a precaution, remove the sim card and SD card as well. Sometimes this does not work if you have the sim card and SD card inserted.
  • Now hold the power button for 1 minute. This will drain any remaining energy that might still be inside of your phone.
  • Do not put the battery into the phone immediately. Leave the phone and battery to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. This will help cool them down.
  • After 5 to 10 minutes, put the battery back into the phone. Do not insert the sim card and SD card right away. First see if your phone reboots to the operating system correctly. If it does, you can insert the sim card and SD card right after.
  • If it does not reboot to the OS, then remove the battery again and press and hold the power button for 2 minutes this time. If this does not work, then try for the third time by pressing and holding the power button for 3 minutes to drain energy after removing the battery.

If none of the three times work, then try the methods below.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode:

With phones that have non-removable batteries, the first method you have to try is to reboot the phone into safe mode. When malfunctioning apps cause the screen to go black, you have to restart the phone in to safe mode and uninstall those apps.

  • First make sure to turn the phone completely off by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  • Now again hold the power button until you see the device manufacturer logo popping on the screen.
  • Then release the power button and press and hold the volume down button until the device starts up. You might have to hold the button for 45 seconds or longer.
  • If you see the Safe Mode displayed on the homescreen, then release the volume down button.

  • Go to Settings > Apps. Uninstall any and every app that you think might be causing the black screen. If you can’t decide, then try uninstalling the newly installed apps first.
  • Afterwards, restart your phone normally. If it restarts to the operating system, then your problem is solved. Otherwise, move on to the third step.

3. Reboot into System Recovery Mode – Wipe Cache Partition:

Cache is the temporary data and junks that you might have deleted from the phone storage. Wiping out cache memory does not delete anything in your phone’s internal storage or external SD cards. However, if a packed cache memory is what has caused the black screen, then hopefully, wiping them out will fix it.

  • Shut down the phone completely by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  • To restart the phone into recovery mode, press the power button, volume up button and home button at the same time until you see the device manufacturer logo on the screen. For devices that do not have the home button, press the power button and volume down button simultaneously.
  • In recovery mode, use the volume down button to move the selection down until you find wipe cache partition. Press on power button to activate it.

  • Once it’s done, move up and select reboot system now and press the power button.

If the device still does not restart normally, then move on to the next step.

4. Reboot into System Recovery Mode – Wipe Data/Factory Reset:

This method is applied as a last resort as it wipes out all data in the internal storage including your photos, music and so on. There is a slight chance that some of your data might be saved if you have Google drive or any other cloud back up on your phone. There are also some third party applications that support recovering data before factory reset using computers. Make sure to remove the external SD card before proceeding.

  • In recovery mode, use the volume down button to move the selection down until you find wipe data/factory reset. Press on power button to activate it.

  • Next scroll down to Press power button to select it.
  • Now move up and select reboot system now and press the power button.
  • Once it reboots and set up is done, you will have gotten rid off the black screen.

5. Fix Hardware Failure:

If none of the above methods work, then the black screen is most probably caused by a hardware failure. The reason might also be a faulty old battery. Change the battery in that case. Don’t forget to take your phone to an expert in case of hardware failure. Do not try anything unless you have advanced knowledge on it; or you might cause more harm than benefit.
